What to do while you are here in Dongara

Dongara is blessed with warm sunny weather, glorious beaches, fine food and peace and quiet. Sounds great doesn’t it? If you’re looking to get out and about and get active while on your visit – here are 5 things you might like to do while in Dongara:

Local Markets: On the first Saturday of every month, Dongara holds their market day from 9am to 1pm at the Old Police Station. Look out for lots of home-made cakes, candles, honey, pickles and jams. As well as lots of local produce and seafood.

And if you are here on Easter Saturday, Dongara hosts its Easter Market Day. There will be lots of local artists, as well as arts and crafts, local jewellery, and fresh produce. The kids can join the Easter egg hunt, you can spend the morning at the markets and then spend the afternoon at the annual Dongara Race meeting – held only once each year.

History trails: Take one of the 12 different walking trails and discover the history of Dongara. Stroll along Shipwreck Walk, check out the Old Police Station or the Royal Steam Roller Mill.

And if you love history – then one weekend is not enough to explore all that Dongara has to offer.

Fishing: Famous for its rock lobsters, Dongara is also loved by fishermen for its awesome beach and off shore fishing. Hook up the trailer and bring the boat – you will be spoilt for choice – tailor, bream, herrings and crabs – a haven for the hungry fisherman.

And don’t forget the Larry lobster Festival in November each year – enjoy the Blessing of the Fleet and the Mid-West Food and Wine Festival. Fish, Eat and be Merry – be there or miss out!

4WD: One for the boys – unhook your boat from the 4WD and get down on the beach. Most of the beach shore fishing north of Dongara is accessible by 4WD through the dunes, while South Beach is flatter but still requires a 4WD for access.

So drive along the beach, find your spot, set up the fishing line, kick back and break open the esky.

Surfing: Try the point for a pumping left hand reef break. Only a 5 minute walk from your door if you are staying here at the Port Dension Holiday units. South beach is also only a short distance away and often has great banks. Windsurfing  and Kite surfing is also a popular.
